\"KISSYou\u2019d think that one of the easiest things to come up with when creating your website is the URL. But often the simplest ones are the hardest to form. As we get older and know more things, it\u2019s hard to keep things that simple.This is the reason why a lot of website owners come with up URLs that are as heavily coded as Da Vinci\u2019s code. Not knowing that the more complex it is, the less it becomes searchable in terms of SEO<\/a>. Next to title tags and Meta descriptions, the one thing users look to is the URL. This is another way for them to know if this website is precisely what they\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n

Example, if they\u2019re searching for computers, other than the Metas, a good URL could read:<\/p>\n

domain.com\/shop\/electronics\/computers.html.<\/em><\/p>\n

Clearly the website\u2019s focus is that it\u2019s a computer shop. But imagine if your URL is something like:<\/p>\n

domain.com.web\/pages\/9876.html.<\/em><\/p>\n

If people don\u2019t have the time to read the Meta description or missed the point of the title, they can\u2019t look to your URL either for clarification. Your website is just a bunch of numbers and letters that is pollution to users\u2019 eyes.<\/p>\n

So how do you keep it simple stu–?<\/strong>
\nKISS (keep it simple stupid) is an SEO ideology that has kept things clean and orderly in the internet world. If it\u2019s an interior design, you could say KISS is minimalism. It\u2019s the complete opposite of Art Nouveau with all its frills and curls.<\/p>\n

In minimalism style, a vase is just a vase, a table a table. When you KISS, you\u2019re making your URL obvious and purposeful.<\/p>\n

Example, going back to the computer shop scenario, you have three departments in your shop: desktop, laptops and tablets. Create a URL that will define each category. A good one would be:<\/p>\n

domain.com\/desktop\/computer.html<\/em><\/p>\n

or<\/p>\n

domain.com\/laptops\/computer.html.<\/em><\/p>\n

Being specific as possible would avoid irrelevant traffic which would lead to a bounce off which would then lead to annoyed customers whose time were wasted. And nobody wants an annoyed customer.<\/p>\n

Static vs. dynamically generated<\/strong>
\nDynamically generated URLs are those with \u201c&\u201d or \u201c?\u201d or other special characters. Static, on the other hand, are plain words which are easier on the eyes.<\/p>\n

Imagine reading:<\/p>\n

domain.keepitsimple.com\/forums\/thread.php?threadid=12345&sort=date.<\/em><\/p>\n

As opposed to reading:<\/p>\n

domain.keepitsimple\/forum\/thread.html.<\/em><\/p>\n

The latter is cleaner right?<\/p>\n

Other than that, Google ranks dynamically generated URL lower than the static ones.<\/p>\n

Figures<\/strong>
\nIt was scientifically proven that people have a better chance remembering words than numerical figures. The same way that street names stick to the mind more than telephone numbers. So as much as possible avoid putting numerical figures on your URL.<\/p>\n

Hyphens<\/strong>
\nIf you have to, pick hyphens to separate keywords rather than other separators like underscore (_) or plus sign (+) or number sign (#). In SEO speak, there isn\u2019t much difference. Hyphens are just a universal favorite on URLs.<\/p>\n

5 Keywords<\/strong>
\nDon\u2019t bombard your URL with more than 5 keywords. For search engines, the others keywords beyond 5 are just gibberish and makes the load heavy.<\/p>\n
